Welcome to Day Four of our Super Simple YouTube 5 Year Anniversary Celebration! Today’s video is already available on our Super Simple ABCs page, but today it is making its YouTube premier.

As requested by many of you, here is the third in our video series, Super Simple ABCs Phonics Fun: R – Z.

These videos accompany our Super Simple ABCs text books. We offer both an Upper Case and a Lower Case book. These are great for teaching letter recognition and learning to write the alphabet. The series features the two text books, music CD and teacher support pack. You can purchase exactly the pieces you need for your students.

Some people have asked about our choice of vocabulary for the Phonics Fun videos and text books. During the creation process, we tried to come up with words that offer a clear association with the target letter and are easily recognizable to young learners. We also wanted words that are easy to gesture, so we avoided words like igloo and narwhal. Each letter has two vocabulary words in the Upper Case book and an additional two, slightly more difficult words in the Lower Case book. We hope you find the words useful and fun. The songs in these Phonics Fun videos are review songs on the Super Simple ABCs Phonics Fun CD, and introduce vocabulary from the Lower Case book.

After you watch the videos, you can practice your skills with our online phonics game. Students can actively work on recognizing and listening to the sound each letter makes.

We’re happy to offer all three Super Simple ABCs Phonics Fun review videos on YouTube! Let us know what you think. E-e-enjoy!

Thanks for joining in our week long celebration of 5 years on YouTube!

Today we are pleased to welcome back Jeremy-sensei! Jeremy spent only one year with us in Japan, but he was a great teacher and he directed and starred in some amazing videos that are much loved by parents, teachers and children around the world (Uh-Huh! People love ‘em). Jeremy is living in the U.S. now, preparing to enter medical school. We hope he becomes a pediatrician. How great would it be for kids to have Jeremy as their doctor?!

Lots of people have requested more videos with Jeremy, so last summer, we invited him back to Japan to work with us for a couple of weeks. It was great to see him and, of course, we had a lot of fun making some brand new videos.

Seven Steps (found on Super Simple Songs 1) is a classic children’s song that is fun and easy to use in the classroom.  You can use it to teach counting, reinforce action verbs, learn forwards and backwards and so much more. Check out the Seven Steps page for other teaching tips.

How do you use this song? We would love to hear your ideas. And what do you think of the new video? Hope you like it!

So what are we celebrating? This week marks the 5th anniversary of our first YouTube video! Did you guess correctly? On September 8, 2006, we uploaded a video of Teaching Tips for “The Bath Song”, that features Devon, Tanja, and Jeremy-sensei demonstrating how to wash your hair, feet, knees and nose among other body parts.

When we started making videos for YouTube, our hope was to help parents and teachers who were using our Super Simple Songs CDs in the classroom and at home. We NEVER thought that these videos would eventually lead us to communicate with so many teachers, parents, and children from around the world.  This month, we will reach another huge YouTube milestone when we pass a quarter of a billion views! Wow! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing Super Simple Songs with your friends.

In honor of our anniversary, we are going to celebrate YouTube style with some fresh new videos!

    • Monday, 9/5 we revisit the video that started it all with “The Bath Song.” Get out your soap!
    • Wednesday, 9/7 don’t miss the much anticipated return of Jeremy-sensei in “Seven Steps.”
    • Thursday, 9/8 check out “Super Simple ABCs Phonics Fun: R-Z.” It’s the final video in the Phonics Fun Series.

and ending the week in a big way…

  • Friday, 9/9 we will unveil a brand new animated version of the classic song “B-I-N-G-O.”

It’s going to be a great week!

And the winner’s are:

Thank you to everyone who entered our guessing contest!  It’s been so fun to read all of your comments. We’ve selected two lucky winners. We had two people guess correctly that this is the 5th anniversary of our YouTube account. Congratulations to Julie Obeid, who we randomly selected as the winner. From reading her comments, I think she’ll be very excited. But because Laurence Philippart was the only other person who  guessed correctly, they will be receiving a prize as well. The second winner, selected from everyone who guessed, whether it was right or wrong, is Núria.

How did we pick the winners? Well, first we assigned the two people who had the right answer a number and then used random.org to pick the winner. Then, we gave a number to everyone who guessed and went back to random.org to select winner number two.

Congratulations again to Julie and Núria! You’ll each be receiving a copy of Super Simple Songs 1, 2, 3 and the Animals CD! And Laurence will get a free download of their choice for guessing correctly.

Thank you all for your support and for an amazing five years of YouTube. We’re looking forward to many more years to come!

Many classes, ESL or otherwise, have some set songs that are done in every class.  Hello, Goodbye, etc.

Here are some suggestions for simple changes to make them fresh and fun again.
If you have been teaching children for a while, you’ve probably got most of these figured out already.  If you are new to it all, have a look….

Sing it in a high voice.
Sing it in a low voice.
Sing it in a monster voice.
Clap/stomp/pat legs to the rhythm while you sing it.
Clap/stomp/pat legs to the rhythm of the song but don’t sing it.
Hellos and Goodbyes- Sing them like animals.  Elephants say hello and goodbye with their long noses.  Gorillas say it while pounding their chests.
Sing the song standing on one foot.
Hum the song.
Mouth the words.  Don’t sing.
Hands behind the back and try singing it without the usual gestures.
Speed it up.  Slow it down.  Alternate speeding up and slowing down within the song.
Pinch your noses and sing it in a funny nasal voice.

Have any other suggestions?  Please share!
