It was September 8, 2006 when the staff at Super Simple Learning created the SuperSimpleSongs YouTube Channel and posted their first video. The Bath Song didn’t go viral and become an overnight mega-hit, but five years later, videos on the channel have received over 250,000,000 views and become favorites of children, parents, and teachers around the world.

Take for example, their most viewed video, a stop motion rendition of The Alphabet Song. Simple in concept, the video has enough action to keep kids’ attention and enough quirky little kicks to keep parents amused, like the very helpful ‘p’ or the ‘y’ that has to take a run around the block before getting in line. This one minute video is closing in on 70,000,000 views, and is one of three videos from the SuperSimpleSongs channel to rank in the top 10 educational videos of all time.

Super Simple Learning was founded by a few American and Canadian teachers at Knock Knock English, a language school in Tokyo, Japan. Finding that many traditional songs for kids were too difficult for young English learners, they decided to create their own songs with simplified lyrics, measured pacing, useful real-world language, and easy-to-teach gestures. The songs developed into an award-winning series of CDs and to help parents and teachers using the CDs, the SuperSimpleSongs YouTube channel was created.

With the opening of the YouTube channel, the reach of the songs vastly increased and the group soon discovered that the qualities that made the music great for young English as a Foreign Language learners also made it appealing to emerging native English speakers such as toddlers and children with special needs.

“We were simply looking to make some videos to support anyone teaching with the songs,” says Super Simple Learning co-founder Devon Thagard. “But pretty early on we started receiving very enthusiastic messages from teachers and parents in places like Argentina, Korea, Slovakia, Iceland, the U.S....pretty much everywhere.” Mr. Thagard thinks this shows a trend among parents and teachers around the world towards using the Internet to access educational content for young learners.

Two dozen of their 60+ YouTube videos have been seen a million times or more, with total views just past the quarter of a billion mark. To celebrate passing this milestone, Super Simple Learning recently released several new YouTube videos, including the counting song Seven Steps and a new animated video of the kids classic songBINGO, but with a Super Simple twist.

Over the past 5 years, Super Simple Learning has expanded their offerings to include textbooks, teaching materials, holiday and topic specific CDs, a phonics series and a new iTunes app that is based on another of their popular YouTube videos, TwinkleTwinkle Little Star.

When we started making videos for YouTube, our hope was to help parents and teachers who were using our Super Simple Songs CDs in the classroom and at home. We NEVER thought that these videos would eventually lead us to communicate with so many teachers, parents, and children from around the world.
